Tracking events and collecting data using tools like Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics is essential for expanding your online reach and converting leads into customers.
Google’s Tag Management system allows users to create and monitor a wide range of tags within a user interface, without having to write new code. Bearing an array of benefits, GTM eliminates the manual process of making your marketing processes more efficient.
If you haven’t yet grasped how to add a new tag to GTM, don’t worry – we’ll be going over exactly how you can create a new tag with ease.
Adding a new tag: a step-by-step guide
In this guide, we’re going to be demonstrating the process of creating a new tag that will track form submissions within Google Analytics 4 (GA4).
Step 1: Create a new tag in the GTM dashboard
Navigate to your Google Tag Manager dashboard. Click the “Add a New Tag” button.
Step 2: Configure your tag
Give your tag an appropriate title, and then click anywhere in the “Tag Configuration” box to select a tag.
Step 3: Choose a tag type
There is an array of tag types to choose from. If you’re using GA4 to monitor and track events, select the Google Analytics: GA4 Event tag type.
Step 4: Link your tag to GA tracking
The next step will be to input your Measurement ID into the respective field.
Navigate to the drop-down arrow beneath the “Configuration Tag” menu item and select “None – Manually Set ID”. Once you have selected this option, input your GA4 measurement ID into the Measurement ID field.
Step 5: Name your event
Thereafter, you need to name your event. Give your event a descriptive name.
Step 6: Choose and configure the trigger
Next, choose a trigger that will fire when you want the tag to be recorded. For this example, we’ll be choosing the “Form Submission” trigger under the User Engagement trigger type options. Name your trigger and ensure the option “All Forms” is ticked.
Step 7: Save your new tag
When you’re happy with the information you’ve provided in the “Tag Configuration” and “Triggering Options”, click the blue “Save” button.
Step 8: Publish your tag by pressing “Submit”
The last step in your quest of creating a new GTM tag is to submit your new tag. Click the blue “Submit” button. Keep in mind that your tag won’t work until it has been submitted.
And just like that, you have created a new tag that fires whenever a form is submitted anywhere on your website.
