Client Overview
Big Talk Entertainment is a Cape Town-based entertainment agency with more than 34 years in the industry, representing over 700 performers, artists and acts across categories including live bands, DJs, comedians, magicians, MCs and speciality acts. The agency books entertainment for corporate events, weddings and private functions, and has worked with brands including Heineken, Qatar Airways, Woolworths, FNB and Shell.
The Challenge
Booking entertainment for a corporate event or wedding is a highly considered decision. Event planners and corporate buyers typically research several suppliers before making contact, and that research increasingly starts in AI-powered search and chat tools rather than a traditional list of blue links. For Big Talk to keep winning that consideration, the business needed to be found and recommended both in classic organic search and in the newer, AI-driven layer of discovery that Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) addresses, without losing ground on the direct and paid channels that already worked.
The Approach
IMS’s engagement with Big Talk combined foundational SEO with GEO-specific work, aimed at making the site’s content easier for both traditional search engines and generative AI platforms to find, understand and cite. The work included:
- Technical SEO and site structure improvements to strengthen the organic search foundation
- Content restructuring across category and service pages, written to answer the specific questions event planners search for
- Entity and schema markup to make the business, its categories and its performers easier for search and AI systems to understand
- Ongoing AI visibility tracking to monitor how and when Big Talk is being surfaced by AI engines

The Results
Organic search was the standout channel over the period, growing faster than the site’s overall traffic and becoming the single largest source of new visitors to bigtalk.co.za.

Organic search grew far faster than the site overall
New users arriving via organic search grew 67%, from 3,605 to 6,026, well ahead of the 53% growth in new users across all channels combined. Organic search’s share of total new users rose from 46% to 51%, meaning it wasn’t just growing, it was becoming a proportionally larger part of how people found Big Talk.
AI engines became a measurable source of traffic for the first time
GA4’s own “AI Assistant” channel grouping recorded zero sessions for Big Talk in the Feb–Jul 2025 period. In the same period in 2026, it recorded 28 sessions and 21 new users, a channel that simply didn’t exist a year earlier. Looking at named referral sources tells the same story: sessions arriving from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, copilot.com and perplexity.ai grew 81% year on year, from 64 to 116.
Brand recall strengthened alongside organic visibility
Direct sessions, people typing bigtalk.co.za straight into their browser, grew 87%, from 1,748 to 3,270. Direct traffic often reflects growing brand awareness, including the well-documented pattern where someone sees a business recommended inside an AI answer, then navigates to the site directly rather than clicking a tracked link, a gap sometimes called dark GEO traffic. The scale of the direct growth alongside the organic and AI Assistant gains is consistent with that pattern.
Why This Matters
For a considered-purchase business like Big Talk, being visible at the moment someone is researching entertainment options, whether that research happens in Google or inside ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, directly affects how many of those searches turn into enquiries. The emergence of a measurable AI Assistant channel, on top of strong organic search growth, is a concrete sign that GEO work is reaching an audience that traditional SEO alone would not have captured.
Methodology Note
All figures are sourced from Big Talk Entertainment’s Google Analytics (GA4) property, comparing 1 February to 31 July 2026 against 1 February to 31 July 2025. Channel groupings (Organic Search, Direct, AI Assistant, Paid Search, Paid Social) reflect GA4’s default channel grouping. Named AI engine referral figures are drawn from GA4’s session source dimension and may overlap partially with the AI Assistant channel grouping.
